MyCarrick Event - The Dock - The Dock - To Hell in a Handbag Theatre,Thu 5 October, 8:30pm
Tickets €20 / €18
The Secret Lives of Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism
While others are preoccupied with cucumber sandwiches and railway cloakrooms, two minor characters from The Importance of Being Earnest are up to their necks in something else. A country rector and a governess, models of Victorian propriety in public. But in private? This is the play behind the play: a tale of blackmail, false identity … and money.
The play – a subversive re-imagining of two minor characters in The Importance of Being Earnest – was a hugely popular and critical success as part of the 2016 Tiger Dublin Fringe. The Sunday Independent called it “Wickedly, side-splittingly funny, in a sophisticated, witty and elegant way…a joyous romp not to be missed, a worthy homage to its master and progenitor” and the Irish Times – giving it four stars – said the play “packs extraordinary amounts of plot and top-notch gags into a compact package”.
Written and performed by Norton & White, the play was developed as part of the Show in a Bag initiative of the Irish Theatre Institute, Fishamble: The New Play Company and Tiger Dublin Fringe. In nominating the initiative for their Special Award for 2016, The Irish Times Theatre Awards judges said it “has enabled the production of outstanding work such as, in the last year, To Hell in a Handbag”.

The Dock - Leitrim Arts office: Iron Mountain Literature Festival(6th/Oct - 7th/Oct)

MyCarrick Event - The Dock - The Dock - Leitrim Arts office: Iron Mountain Literature Festival Arising from the John McGahern seminar which ran from 2007 for eight years, the Iron Mountain Literature Festival was established in 2016, reframed in a wider context involving writers, artists and thinkers from many perspectives. The festival draws much of its motivation from the works and legacy of John McGahern, an approach which has allowed us to curate a wide-ranging literary event combining panels, talks, readings and field trips which look to ideas central to, and arising from, an exploration of place, home and identity. This year's festival discusses the role of culture in a time of crises of borders and migration and features among others Henry Glassie, Emeritus College Professor of Folklore at Indiana University Bloomington, poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Ireland Professor of Poetry Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin.
As part of the festival Leitrim County Council and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre will present the John McGahern Award to encourage new writing and to pay tribute to John McGahern and the exceptional contribution he made to literature, and to Leitrim.

The Dock - Luka Bloom(19th/Oct - 19th/Oct)

MyCarrick Event - The Dock - The Dock - Luka Bloom Tickets €20 / €18
With a poet's heart and a rockster's soul, Luka Bloom is regarded as one of Ireland's most respected contemporary folk artists, having produced over 20 albums since the 1970s, Bloom continues to push the boundaries of what his music can do. A master interpreter, Bloom has continued to balance original songs with reinventions of tunes by a diverse range of songwriters. Like many who write songs, Luka's orchestra of choice is the guitar. What makes his career a little different is his constant search for a new voice within the guitar. The guitar is the landscape on which the song is created, and he is forever probing that landscape for new inspiration. No effects, no gadgets. Time, effort and a whole lot of love bring forth new voicings within the instrument, and bit by bit, the songs come to life. And eventually they fly, bringing Luka with them to be heard in Byron Bay, San Francisco, Hamburg, or even Doolin. Almost 40 years since recording his first album, Luka Bloom comes to The Dock Theatre on October 19th with his latest album 'Frugalisto'. More info and Ticket Booking here....

A comedy with a few serious bits! John McDwyer describes his play, Turning Mammy, as a comedy with a few serious bits. Sisters Martha and Mary live together on the family farm. Mary is involved in a long term search for her baby who was adopted at birth while Martha is involved in a long term wait for neighbour, Ambrose’s Mammy to die so that she can finally marry the love of her life. That’s as simple as it gets, however, as we discover dysfunctional people with deep secrets and passions. Directed by the author, this is a play with as many laugh out loud set-ups as moments of sadness. Another Beezneez winner.

Gerry Farrell plays a host of characters from a schoolmaster to a missionary priest to a football trainer in a tour de force performance which has brought audiences to their feet all over Ireland and the UK. An Ordinary Man will have theatregoers in tears of joy and sadness as the play charts the life and times of an ordinary man through his life of deaths, births and marriages with a bit of football and ballroom dancing thrown in, just for the craic.
Unmissable.
